MHRD’s official statement about JEE: JEE Advanced to be objective

Putting an end to the speculations about the new JEE pattern, MHRD finally issued an official notification on August 14^th.

Here are the highlights of the notice:

1. JEE 2013 would be in two parts – JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

2. JEE Mains: A board (called JEE Apex Board) has been constituted by MHRD. Ashok Mishra (former director, IIT Mumbai), would chair this board. Other members include Chairman of CBSE, representatives from MHRD, AICTE and different states (where IITs are located). This board would be responsible for conducting JEE Mains. Around 15 lakh students are expected to appear for this exam. It would be an objective exam (difficulty level comparable to AIEEE’s)

3. JEE Advanced: Expected to be conducted on June 2^nd, this exam would be objective (pattern and difficulty level same as IIT JEE 2012). 1.5 students would appear for it. This has come as a relief to students as they won’t have to change their preparation techniques.IIT Kharagpur would conduct JEE Advanced in 2013, with aid from the other IITs (according to a ‘Times of India’ report).

4. Advanced paper would have the same pattern as IIT JEE 2012, i.e. there would be two sessions (on the same day) testing students’ advanced PCM concepts.

5. Admission in IITs: For IITs, as decided earlier, the top 1.5 lakh scorers of Main exams (who are in the top 20 percentile bracket of their respective boards in terms of class 12 scores) would appear for the Advanced exam. After fulfilling the two criteria, the admission would totally depend on a student’s Advanced exam score.

6. State Engineering Colleges: If states wish to use the JEE scores to admit students in their regional colleges, then a separate merit list would be issued to them.

7. Paper can be in regional language on a state’s demand.

8. The 1.5 lakh students selected after the main exam would be from all categories, and not from open category. The percentage break-up for different categories is not known yet.

9. Board improvement exam: 2012 board candidates can appear for a board improvement exam in 2013, the arrangements for which would be made by their respective boards.

IIT Bombay wants 50,000 and not 1.5 lakh students to appear for JEE Advanced

IIT Bombay senate has approved the ‘compromise formula for JEE’ (a 2-tier exam and the 20 percentile board eligibility criteria). However,  it has objections on allowing 1.5 lakh students to appear for the final IIT entrance, i.e. advanced exam for JEE. The senate members, in a meeting on Wednesday recommended that the number of students appearing for JEE advanced be around 5 times the number of IIT seats, and not more.

Therefore, according to the suggestion,only the top 50,000 scorers of the main exam should be allowed to sit for the advanced paper, and not 1.5 lakh as suggested earlier by the IIT council.

According to sources, there might be two reasons behind this recommendation:

1. As NITs have decided to follow the 60% JEE Main + 40% board score formula, IITs don’t feel the need to screen so many students just for the 10000 odd IIT seats. Prof. Narasimhan, President of All India IIT Faculty Federation quoted, “There was a lot of debate on why 1.5 lakh students be screened for the advanced exam. Now that NITs are not part of the advanced exam, we suggested that the number should be less, essentially five times the number of seats, which comes around 50,000.”

2. Less number of examinees would allow flexibility to IITs for administering a subjective exam: According to sources, IITs are deliberating switching to a subjective pattern for JEE Advanced. In case of an objective exam, the evaluation of answer-sheets is computerized, which wouldn’t be possible in a subjective exam. It would be more convenient to evaluate 50000 subjective answer-sheets than 1.5 lakh as proposed earlier.

Highlights of the new JEE pattern proposal (the compromise formula) are:

1) Two exams, JEE Main and JEE Advanced.

2) 1.5 lakh top rank holders of JEE Main can appear for the advanced exam.

3) To be eligible for IITs, a student must be in the top 20 percentile bracket of his/her respective board (in terms of class XII scores).

IIT Bombay had met on Wednesday, July 25th, 2012 to discuss this compromise formula, where the suggestion to screen only 50000 students for the advanced exam was made. A similar meeting of IIT Kanpur senates is scheduled on July 28th. Also, even though IIT Bombay has accepted the pattern, the faculty and students are still against the idea, as was evident from the results of a poll.

A final decision would be taken by the Joint Admission Board in August.

IIT Kanpur accepts the JEE ‘compromise formula’, but has a few recommendations

IIT Kanpur has finally Okayed the 20 percentile formula for JEE 2013, but only as an interim measure. The approval has been given because IIT Kanpur does not want students to be in uncertainty any more.

In the words of an official, “The Senate recommended the IIT Council’s decision keeping in mind the urgent need to remove uncertainties from the minds of students. There is less time gap to put forth any objections.”

IIT Kanpur has been very verbal about its opposition to the common entrance test pattern, and even its acceptance of the 20 percentile formula is not without a list of recommendations. Here are the suggestions made by IIT Kanpur:

1. The eligibility criteria for the JEE 2013 aspirants who appeared for boards in 2012 must remain the same as before, i.e. 60% in boards. According to IIT Kanpur senate, the new eligibility criteria (top 20 percentile formula) would be unfair to the 2012 batch students, as there was no clarity about the importance of board marks during their exams.

Though the 2012 board candidates can reappear for boards in 2013, most students are of the opinion that it would be too stressful to appear for both the exams (JEE and boards) again.

2. IIT Kanpur also said that the number of shortlisted candidates must depend on the pattern of JEE advanced. If, for instance, JEE advanced is subjective, it would not be practical to shortlist 1.5 lakh toppers of JEE Main. 50000, suggested by IIT Bombay would be a more practical number in such case.

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) will meet shortly to discuss the pattern of the JEE advanced test.

3. The Kanpur senate has suggested that for JEE 2014 and beyond a senate committee should be formulated. This committee would analyse all the aspects of the admission process and make the recommendations for JEE 2014 and beyond accordingly.

After considering these recommendations, a final decision would be taken in August.

A compromise formula was agreed upon by IITs and MHRD on June 27th 2012 for new JEE pattern. Here are the key points of the compromise formula for those of you who are still not clear about the new pattern:

1) There would be a 2-tier exam: Mains and Advanced.

2) JEE Main would be an objective PCM exam, and all the aspirants can appear for it.

3) Initially it was decided that 1.5 lakh top rank holders of the main exam would be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. IIT Bombay, in its senate meet has suggested that this number be reduced to 50000. As discussed earlier, more recently IIT Kanpur has suggested that this number must depend on the pattern of the JEE Advanced exam.

4) Advanced exam might be subjective (decision is pending regarding its pattern), and is the entrance exam for IITs.

5) Only the students in the top 20 percentile bracket of their respective boards would be eligible for admission in IITs, irrespective of their JEE Advanced scores.

6) The students who fulfil the board percentile criteria would then be judged solely on their JEE Advanced scores for admission in IITs.

Steps to fill  IIT JEE Main Application Form

1. Go to online form link
2. Fill in the details
3. Confirmation page with the registration number will appear. Take a print out.
4. Sign and fix your thumb print on the page and write your correct residential addresson the confirmed printout.
5. Send the filled sheets to the concerned JEE office( address will be announced in late October) along with the demand draft equal to the application fee amount.
6. Payments can also be made through credit/debit card before the due date.
7. You will receive your admit card for the JEE Main examination 2013.

JEE Advanced 

After the JEE Main 2013 scores are declared, the top 1,50,000 students ( including all categories ) should register online at http://jeeadv.iitd.ac.in/ to appear for JEE Advanced 2013

Maharashtra to adopt New JEE in 2014-15

Maharashtra State Government is in favor of new Joint Entrance Exam ( JEE ) proposed by the HRDminister for engineering admissions.It will accept the new JEE format from2014-15 instead of 2013.

The decision to adopt the new JEE entrance exam format from 2014  is to benefit the students . The Maharashtra Government wants to ensure that the students get enough time to prepare themselves for it.Bringing into effect, the new IIT JEE entrance exam pattern from the year 2013 would not give them much time to prepare who are currently in class XII.

Maharashtra Government has ensured that the market already has the revised curriculum textbooks for students to start their preparations. The Government will propose 50 : 50 relative weightage to performance in the higher secondary certificate (HSC,Std XII) board exam and in the national JEE in admission to unaided engineering colleges in the state .But the Government has not taken a formal decision on it.The ministry prefers a 60:40 weightage ratio for the JEE and Board exam scores, but has left it to the State Government to take a call on the matter for admissions for unaided engineering colleges.

For the year 2013-2014, the exam pattern will remain the same.The Maharashtra Government will conduct MH-CET as the entrance examination. Higher Education Minister, Rajesh Tope , said that the department will look into redesigning and reforming the Class XII state board syllabus to cover topics that will appear in 

IIT-JEE 2013 Registered a New Record

This year, the Joint Engineering Entrance Exam(JEE), also known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), has registered a record of 14 lakh candidates enrolling for 2013 exams. This has been the highest numberever registered. The exam will be conducted in April 2013.

Experts say that the reason behind the rise in numbers is that many states are doing away with their state-level engineering exams. An increase in 2.8 lakh has been witnessed when compared to the previous years’ IIT applications. With the increase in number of IIT aspirants enrolling for the exam, competitions are also amplifying simultaneously. Indian students would face the toughest situation to get into the top universities. Qualifying the IIT-JEE Exam and getting admission into IITs would be more difficult, as there are some thousand seats available and  number of candidates range in millions.

IIT-JEE Examination 2013:

The exam will be conducted in two parts : JEE Main and JEE Advanced. While JEE Main will be administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education, JEE Advanced will be conducted by IITs.  Admission to National Institutes of Technology (NIT’s) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIT’s)would be based on JEE Main scores. The merit list for admission will be prepared by giving 40% weightage to class XII or other qualifying examination marks and 60% to the performance in JEE (main) examination.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has allowed a second attempt at board exams in 2013 to the students who have already appeared in 2012. This would give them a fair chance to make it to the top 20 percentile, eligible to write theAdvanced IIT-JEE 2013 test.

Earlier students concentrated on coaching for the IIT JEE Entrance Exam and preparedfor the class XII boards in a way that they scored the minimum marks. Giving weightage to Board results will encourage many students who are not exposed to intensive coaching. Now they too stand agood chance to be on the merit list by performing well in the CBSE Boards.

An Important News regarding class 12 board exams has been recently updated on a national news portal. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to design a common curriculum for Math and Science papers for class 12 board exam which would be effective from 2014 onwards. This would offer a level playing field to class 12 students from different boards while taking centralized entrance exams like the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
